Jill Barber and Kim Wempe Romance Antigonish

**VIDEO OF EVENT FOUND BELOW**
Last night's show was full of romance to say the least. StFX student and budding female singer/songwriter Kim Wempe warmed the crowd up with Donald MacLellan as a sort-of musical foreplay to the big show. Kim played her powerful and moving tunes with plenty of gusto and a lot of fiddle solos with the help of Donald. With her on-stage charm and relateable music it was the perfect thing to get the cozy crowd ready.
Jill Barber played to a a packed cafeteria that looked more like a romantic coffee house than the place we go between classes. She was charismatic, she was funny, she was endearing - Jill was amazing. As she joked about how very few of her songs aren't about love, uttered puns about "making out" and "necking" and even called a friend on the west coast the crowd began to fall in love with Jill. It was the perfect way to spend Valentine's Day. Even if you thought you were alone before the show, Jill Barber is the perfect V-Day date.

Union makes serious election shake-up

After many frustrations, poorly run elections and concern over the orderly running of the upcoming Presidential, BOG and Senate elections, the StFX Student Union Council passed a motion to relieve the three Returning Officers from their positions for the remainder of the year.

After an hour of in-camera discussion, the Council emerged from intense discussion and passed a motion to remove the officers from their job. Arts Councillor Matt Edmonds put forth the motion to make the change. The motion was was passed unanimously by the elected council, with abstentions from the two Councillors who are candidates in the upcoming election.

The motion read:
"I move that Chief Returning Officer, the Deputy Chief Returning Officer, and the Returning Officer be relieved of their duties, and of their positions, effective immediately."

Union President Adam Harris and Vice President Marc Rodrigue will work under interim Council Chair Michael MacIsaac to facilitate the election.

The minutes for the meeting will be available here shortly.

Council presents the first ever International Award

TheU Council awarded the first ever $500 dollar International Student Bursary to Soo Jin Lee . Her first year at X has seen her become very active academically and socially involving herself with student life.

"This bursary is really a token of support to all students who arrive at StFX from other countries and help enhance the experience for all students at this university,"" said Union Vice President Marc Rodrigue.

The award, initially created to be given during the frosh week festivities in September was delayed until later in the year. The bursary was presented at the February meeting of council Sunday evening in the Student Union Building.

Classified appears through the Weeds

It wasn't a capacity crowd but the jury is still out as to whether or not the Golden X Inn could handle any more of Halifax Hip-Hop artist Classified and his crew of rappers and Dj. Taking the stage nearing 11pm, Dj I-V warmed up the crowd for the main attraction Classified.

Playing a sixty minute set, Classified rhymed off many old and new tracks and left the impressive crowd satisfied as the show concluded. The artist, of Enfield Nova Scotia fame, took the return visit back to StFX to get the crowd jumping and break some rules.

"The artists on stage did at one point appear to be smoking a joint. The lyrics to the accompanying rap only served to draw attention to the weed but CP's took care of the situation," noted VP Communications Neil Stephen Sunday.

A later attempt at smoking on stage resulted in the police being called to the venue just after the concert had ended. "It's near impossible to control what an artist does on stage. We don't really care what someone does on their own time, but you can't even smoke a cigarette in a bar, let alone a joint, so the CP's did a good job of addressing the situation," said Stephen.

Despite the drama, party goers screamed along with the hip-hop tracks and seemed appreciative of the art not seen often on our StFX campus.

The Debate to End all Debates - Sort of.

Pat Connors and Matt MacGillvary, both candidates for TheU's highest office will square off Tuesday night in the All-Candidates debate set for 6:30 pm in the Student Union Building Cafe. The two Presidential candidates will be flanked by their running-mates in what may prove to be the most interesting Presidential debate in recent memory.

In addition to the presidential debate, candidates for Board of Governors and University Senate will be fielding questions from the audience and moderator. The open style debate marks the first time candidates can speak to each other rather than to the audience and moderator.
