16 and 0, that's damn good.

For a team that has 16 wins and zero losses, it surprising there isn't more buzz about this Saturday's game against Saint Mary's here at the KMC. As Xaverian Weekly sports editor Matt Skube wrote in this weeks edition of the paper, womens sport at StFX tends not to get the crowds they deserve.

Speaking with X-Women Volleyball coach Michelle Aucoin, Eastlink television asked her if she found it difficult for female sports to get attention due to all the success of our universities male programs. Her answer: CIS Rugby champions, top finishes in Cross-County and an incredible winning streak in hockey, all compliments of our women's programs here at StFX.

The point? Our girls are good. Really good and some of the best will be facing off on Saturday against Saint Mary's at 2pm at the KMC. Take a break from your crazy hectic Saturday afternoon and get your ass to the rink. In fact, try checking out some x-volleyball action Saturday night at 6 in the OC main gym or the next day at 1pm. Admission is free to all of the above.

Wintersleep awaken the nish music scene

On a cold night, in the heart of an Atlantic Canadian winter a small town in Nova Scotia decided to have a party. Antigonish boiled over with anticipation for one of the countries most impressive up and coming musical talents in Wintersleep. They delivered.

The Halifax natives took to the stage to a roar of applause not heard since Emily Hanes and her Metric team in the fall of 07. The men did not disappoint, blowing the roof of the MacKay room and the minds of all in attendance.

"This is what it's about," said VP Activities Corey Bradbury during the show, "exposing people to new music and having a good time. I think we succeeded on both tasks this evening." Bradbury, in his second year as VP Activities, has a unique view on creating events. "We are constantly putting together fun, engaging shows that leave people satisfied and happy. Standing outside tonight after the show, asking people if they enjoyed themselves is a highlight for me and I gotta say, i loved their answers."

The news was not all good. The show did not break-even and in fact lost a bit of money. VP Communications Neil Stephen elaborated on the situation. "You can't always win. What we saw tonight was a great product put off an amazing performance. Not enough folks went through the gates and the reality is we have to communicate the message better. There is always next time and we'll be fighting for a sell-out."

The U has many shows on the way with Classified, Jill Barber and others coming in February. Stay tuned to TheU.ca for more info.

Presidential Election changes announced

This years President and Vice President elections are going to be much more open with new election rules passed this past council. The changed will see candidates able to begin campaigning much earlier than previous years with the official start date coming this Monday, 28th of January.

The restrictions on materials and methods of publicity and communication have been greatly reduced with a focus on innovative ideas for reaching students. This is exciting because it does not limit campaigns who want to try new things.

Candidate nomination forms for President/Vice President, Board of Governors and Senate are now available on the 4th floor of the Student Union Building from Linda MacDonald in the big glass bubble.(you can miss her desk)

Senate election postponed until Monday

With some egg on it's face and pride in it's pocket, the chairs office has postponed the senate election slated for this past Monday to next Monday, the 28th of January.

The independent company which hosts the election software The Student Union uses for it's elections had an error in it's programming from a previous election held at a different school. The result was a system that was unable to recognize most voters and those it did allow to login, were permitted to vote several times.

A sincere apology was offered from the returning office and a sigh of relief from the communications department as it could now properly promote the senate election. Stay tuned to the council ticker for more information on this and other union issues.
